Post-Surgical Recovery in Cedar Park, TX

Surgery gets the structural problem fixed. Physical therapy is what gets you back to actually using that joint again. One-on-one, with a Doctor of PT — every session.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

Surgical outcomes depend heavily on the quality of the rehabilitation that follows. The procedure corrects a structural problem — a torn ligament, a damaged meniscus, a compressed nerve, a worn joint surface. But the weeks and months of progressive loading and retraining how your body moves that come after surgery are what determine whether you actually return to full function. A technically successful surgery with poor rehab still produces a poor outcome.

At PT Liftology, we work with patients recovering from a wide range of orthopedic and spinal surgeries. Dan and Elaine are Doctors of PT with fellowship training in orthopedic manual therapy — they build session-by-session programs specific to the procedure, the surgeon's protocol, and what the individual is trying to get back to. We ask the right questions about your goals at the start and orient the entire rehab around reaching them — not just meeting generic discharge criteria.

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • Swelling and stiffness that's limiting range of motion weeks after surgery
  • Significant muscle atrophy that hasn't improved as expected
  • Progress that stalled — you're months post-op and still not back to normal
  • Scar tissue or adhesions making certain movements uncomfortable
  • Uncertainty about what you can and can't do at each stage of recovery
  • A clinic that splits you between techs and doesn't give you consistent attention

How PT Liftology Approaches Post-Surgical Rehab

We coordinate with your surgeon's post-operative protocol and build a session-by-session program around it. We request the operative report and protocol at the start, clarify any questions about precautions and timelines, and use that framework to structure every phase of the rehab. Early phases focus on swelling management, protected range of motion, and preventing the muscle atrophy that sets in quickly after surgery. Middle phases focus on rebuilding strength and movement quality. Late phases focus on return to sport or full activity — the specific movements that matter to your life.

Every session is one-on-one with a Doctor of PT. No techs, no being passed off, no waiting around. We track your progress precisely and advance the program as the tissue signals readiness — not according to a generic calendar. Cash-pay and HSA/FSA accepted. No referral needed to get started, although we'll coordinate with your surgeon from the outset.

Depending on your procedure, treatment may include:

Recovery: What It Typically Looks Like

Post-surgical timelines are largely set by the procedure and the surgeon's protocol. This is a general structure — your clinician will map it to your specific surgery at the first visit.

1

Phase 1 — Protect & Early Mobilization

Swelling management, protected range of motion within protocol limits, early activation of the surrounding musculature to prevent atrophy. Pain management. Establishing a clear understanding of what's permitted and what's not at each stage.

2

Phase 2 — Rebuild Strength & Range of Motion

Progressive loading of the operated structure and surrounding musculature. Manual therapy to address scar tissue restrictions and restore joint mobility. Retraining how your body moves to restore normal patterns. Criteria-based progression through this phase.

3

Phase 3 — Return to Sport & Full Activity

Sport-specific or activity-specific loading that matches your actual goals. For athletes, this means returning to barbell work, running, court sports, or whatever the surgery was for. Discharge when objective criteria are met — not when a calendar says so.

FAQ — Post-Surgical Recovery

It depends on the procedure. Some surgeons want to see their patients for a follow-up before referring to PT. Others have patients start within the first week. For most orthopedic surgeries, early PT — even in the first week — is beneficial for swelling management and preventing the significant muscle atrophy that sets in quickly after an operation. Contact us and we'll coordinate the timing with your surgeon's protocol.
Yes. You have the right to choose your physical therapist regardless of where your surgeon refers. We'll obtain the post-op protocol directly from your surgical team and coordinate accordingly. The main thing your surgeon cares about is that you follow the protocol — which we do, rigorously. The difference is you get a full hour, one-on-one, with a Doctor of PT every session, rather than being split between three patients and a tech.
This is one of the more common situations we see. Patients who plateaued in their initial rehab, or who didn't get adequate PT after surgery, often still have significant room for improvement even months or years later. Residual stiffness, persistent weakness, movement pattern issues, and scar tissue restrictions are all addressable. Book a consult and we'll give you an honest assessment of what's realistically achievable.
Yes — always. We request the operative notes and post-op protocol from your surgeon before your first session and structure everything around it. If there are questions about specific timelines or precautions, we contact the surgical team directly. Your surgeon's guidelines are the framework; we work within them while maximizing the quality of care within each phase.
